During the COVID-19 pandemic, local governments throughout the EECA region faced numerous challenges in terms of responding to emergencies. What started as a health crisis, followed with the war in Ukraine, turned into the biggest economic recession since the World War II, with severe and long-lasting consequences. Fiscal pressures emanating from the consequences of the pandemic coupled with ensuing inflationary pressures, local governments today face significant challenges in providing basic local services. As the crises deepens the number of vulnerable people increase which puts pressures on local governments in achieving social inclusion, supporting vulnerable groups and contributing towards the achievement of SDGs. This session will discuss local service delivery and crisis management challenges in the region.
