Open Planning Meeting: Decentralization in Sub-Saharan Africa

Open planning session: October 6, 2021

Effective decentralization and localization—including local governance systems that empower and encourage local leaders to promote inclusion and equity—form an important precondition for resilient, inclusive, sustainable, equitable and efficient development.

With this understanding in mind, the Local Public Sector Alliance wants to take stock—on a region by region basis—of the state of decentralization and localization around the world. The Decentralization and Local Development in Africa – Knowledge Sharing Week is scheduled to take place from, December 6-10, 2021. Alongside other partners, this webinar series is organized in partnership with the World Bank, UNDP, and UNCDF.

The global webinar series–like the Local Public Sector Alliance itself–is “of the Community of Practice, for the Community of Practice, and by the Community of Practice.” As such, we are looking to identify colleagues and organizations who would be willing to contribute to the upcoming webinars as co-organizers, moderators, presenters or panelists.

In addition to more general webinar discussions on decentralization and local development in Sub-Saharan Africa during the week of December 6-10, 2021, we also want to explore the possibility of adding a number of thematic and country-specific webinar sessions related to decentralization in Africa, possibly during the week of December 13-17, 2021.

As a first step, we would like to invite all interested colleagues and organizations to join us for an open planning meeting (on Zoom) for upcoming Local Public Sector Alliance Webinar Series on Decentralization and Local Development in Sub-Saharan Africa. This planning meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at 8:00 am EST (1 pm Abuja; 2 pm Johannesburg; 3 pm Nairobi).

As part of its ongoing effort to promote high-quality, policy-relevant research on issues related to decentralization and local development in Africa, the Local Public Sector Alliance is offering a number of awards for outstanding papers on decentralization and local development.

The submission deadline for research papers on decentralization and localization in Africa is November 7, 2021. Further details and application materials are available online here.
