Decentralization and local governance shape how countries deliver services, manage public resources, and build social and economic resilience. Yet despite their central importance, debates in the field often remain fragmented—focused on laws and institutional designs rather than on how multilevel governance systems actually function in practice.
To help strengthen shared understanding across the community of practice, the Local Public Sector Alliance is launching a new weekly video series: LPSA’s Monday Minutes.
Why a Monday Minute?
Each LPSA Monday Minute is a short, one-minute explainer for practitioners, policymakers, researchers, and development partners working on decentralization, multilevel governance, and local public sector reform. Each episode focuses on a single idea: a core concept, a recurring challenge, or a lesson from experience. The format is intentionally simple. One minute. One insight. One takeaway.
The purpose is not to offer quick fixes or promote particular models. It is to build a clearer shared language around multilevel governance, surface the political and institutional realities that shape reform outcomes, and connect learning across countries, regions, and systems.
There is no one-size-fits-all model for decentralization. But progress on global stability, economic prosperity, sustainable development, and effective public service delivery depends fundamentally on how well governments coordinate across levels and how strongly public institutions engage the people they serve.
What the series will cover
Over its first year, LPSA’s Monday Minutes will move from foundations and first principles, to thematic deep dives on issues such as fiscal decentralization, inclusive governance, service delivery, urban development, conflict and fragility, and local climate action, and then to regional perspectives from across the world. The series hopes to feature voices from across LPSA’s working groups and partner institutions, reinforcing a common, experience-based perspective on what makes multilevel governance systems work.
