SUMMARY:LPSA Thematic Working Group on Local Democracy & Inclusive Governance – Open Meeting – February 2025
DESCRIPTION:Around the world\, local democracy faces increasing challenges\, from rising political polarization to acts of violence and intimidation against local leaders.  These threaten not only their safety but also the democratic values and systems they represent. Councillors and other local representatives—crucial bridges between governments and communities—are increasingly targeted by political polarization\, social media-fueled abuse\, and weakened legal protections. These threats erode public trust\, discourage civic participation\, and destabilize governance structures. \nThe upcoming webinar “Protecting Local Leadership: Addressing Criminality\, Intimidation\, and Threats to Democratic Governance” scheduled for Thursday\, February 20\, 2025 (8:00 AM ET) will explore these critical issues\, assess their impact on governance\, and identify actionable strategies to safeguard local leadership while strengthening democratic institutions. \nLPSA’s Thematic Working Group on Local Democracy\, Inclusive Governance and Community-led Development aims to bring together government officials\, policy practitioners\, scholars\, civil society organizations\, and citizens who share an interest and expertise on local democracy\, inclusive governance\, and community-led development. Registration is required for this meeting. \nRegister here!   \nWe need your help to make this meeting a success: If you have any updates about local Democracy\, Inclusive Governance and Community-led Development in your country; updates about new research that you would like mentioned during the open meeting\, please email the Working Group co-chairs at localdem@decentralization.net so that a brief announcement can be made at the beginning of the meeting.   \nReminder: You can join any LPSA Expert Working Group free of cost and receive reminders and updates by opting-in to one or more working groups as part of your LPSA Membership registration.
